Simply stated, GM is the largest auto manufacturer in the world. In fact, GM is an umbrella company that encompasses a number of favorite American auto brands. Founded in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, GM has acquired a large number of brands throughout the years, including Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. As one of Detroit’s big three, GM manufactures vehicles in 34 countries and sells vehicles in some 140 countries. Historically, GM has been one of the largest employers in the United States.
GM ran into a financial hard place in 2009 and was forced to scale back operations, reducing the number of US plants from 47 to 34, the number of dealerships from 5,900 to 5,000, and the number of employees from around 91,000 to around 68,000. Though filing for bankruptcy and scaling back operations, GM continues to manufacture favored brands like Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC.
